Walking around Lavachiello
There is outstanding country and hill walking from Lavacchiello. It is on the South facing side of one of the many rolling and increasingly high hills that form the foothills that lead to the Apennine mountains and Tuscany. Fifty metres from the main studio lies the 805A long distance footpath running South/North with further options for circular walks. We are still exploring local walks but here is a brief description of two we have mapped out. Our hosts are happy to act as guides if you prefer not to wrestle with a map.
Going North towards Bologna, high up in the hills, lies the landmark of the Monte Formiche (above). A three to four hour circular walk leads you down and then more gently up across farmland, with vast open views, to the Church at its top. When you reach the top, views spread right across to the peaks of the Apennines and back towards Bologna.
Going South a three to four hour return walk will lead you up to the dizzyingly high peak of Monte Bibele (above) where an old Celtic village has been recently unearthed. On the way we discovered a ruined barn where graffiti from the partisans fighting in the Second World War is clearly seen inscribed on the walls inside.
In both cases the scenery takes in ancient woodland, open countryside and mountain views. One of the great advantages of the local countryside is the near total absence of hedges.
Within a short drive lie the delights of ‘The Five valleys’, essentially a series of valleys and hills all leading on and up to the passes that cross into Tuscany over the Apennines.
Enjoy, and as we discover more we will post more details up. There is also great advice on hand from the other inhabitants of Lavachiello!
